The Most Common Causes of Commercial Drain Emergencies
Commercial drainage systems experience significantly greater demand than domestic systems. Higher usage naturally increases wear and the likelihood of problems developing over time.
One of the most common causes of emergency call outs is the gradual accumulation of fats, oils and grease. Restaurants, cafés and catering facilities are particularly vulnerable when grease enters the drainage system instead of being properly managed. Over time, these substances cool and harden, restricting water flow until a complete blockage develops.
Foreign objects also contribute to many drainage emergencies. Wet wipes, sanitary products, paper towels, food waste and packaging materials can all become lodged within pipework, particularly where existing deposits have already narrowed the internal diameter of the drain.
Tree roots present another significant issue, especially around older commercial premises. Even the smallest crack within a pipe can attract roots searching for moisture. As the roots expand, they restrict flow and can eventually fracture the pipe itself.
Older drainage infrastructure may also suffer from corrosion, displaced joints or structural deterioration. Without routine inspections, these hidden defects often remain unnoticed until they develop into expensive failures.
